Red Velvet Cake
Aunt Kathy’s Red Velvet Cake
(The REAL Deal)
½ cup shortening
1 ½ cups sugar
2 eggs
½ cup red food coloring (Expensive but worth it!)
2 tsp Cocoa
1 tsp Vanilla
1 tsp Salt
1 Cup buttermilk
2 ¼ cups sifted flour
1 tsp vinegar
1 tsp baking soda
- Cream shortening and sugar until fluffy
- Add eggs one at a time.
- Beat 1 minute.
- Mix Cocoa and coloring in a cup to make a paste.
- Add to the above
- Put Vanilla in buttermilk and add slowly to mixture.
Alternate milk and flour - Mix vinegar and soda in cup.
Add to mixture.
Put in two 9” pans
Bake at 350 degrees for 25-30 min
Aunt Kathy’s Red Velvet Frosting
(The REAl Deal)
1 cup milk
5 tablespoons flour
- Cook the paste
- Then cool till cold! (you cannot rush this)
- In a separate bowl
- 1 cup butter (real)
- 1 cup sifted powder sugar
- 1 tsp. Vanilla
